Never had a professional massage before? Here is a complete guide to what happens before, during, and after your first session — so you can relax and enjoy it fully.
If you have never had a professional massage, you might feel a little nervous about your first visit. That is completely normal. Many of our first-time clients arrive unsure of what to expect — and leave wondering why they waited so long. This guide will walk you through everything that happens before, during, and after your first massage so you can feel confident and relaxed.
Before You Arrive
Booking Your Appointment
Call or text us at 289-657-1666 to schedule your visit. We will ask a few questions about what you are looking for — relaxation, tension relief, or a specific area of concern — and help you choose the right service and session length. If you are unsure, a 60-minute relaxation massage is a great first choice.
What to Wear
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You do not need to dress up — this is about relaxation, not appearance. You will be given privacy to undress to your comfort level and will be properly draped with a sheet or towel throughout the session. Most clients undress fully or down to their underwear, but you can wear as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Your attendant will only uncover the area they are working on at any given time.
What to Eat and Drink
Avoid eating a heavy meal within an hour of your appointment — a full stomach can make lying face down uncomfortable. Do drink plenty of water before and after your session, as massage releases toxins from your muscles and hydration helps flush them out.
When You Arrive at the Spa
Try to arrive 5 to 10 minutes before your appointment. This gives you time to settle in, use the restroom, and fill out a brief intake form. The form asks about any medical conditions, injuries, or areas of concern so your attendant can customize the session safely.
You will be greeted at reception and shown to your treatment room. Your attendant will introduce themselves, review your intake form, and ask about any specific areas you would like them to focus on. This is the time to mention anything — a sore shoulder, a tight lower back, or simply that you want a gentle, relaxing experience.
During Your Massage
Once you are comfortably settled on the massage table, your attendant will begin. Here is what to expect:
- The pressure: For a relaxation massage, the pressure will be light to moderate. For deep tissue, it will be firmer. Your attendant will check in, but do not hesitate to speak up if you want more or less pressure.
- The sensations: You may feel warmth, a gentle stretching sensation, or mild discomfort as tension releases. This is normal. Sharp pain is not — if anything hurts, say so immediately.
- The atmosphere: Soft lighting, a comfortable table, and a quiet environment help you relax. Some clients drift off to sleep — that is perfectly fine and a sign your body is truly relaxing.
- Communication: Your attendant may ask how the pressure feels. You can also speak up at any time — to request a change, ask a question, or simply let them know you are comfortable.
After Your Massage
Your attendant will step out so you can dress in privacy. Take your time — there is no rush. When you are ready, you can head to reception to pay and book your next appointment if you would like.
Here is what to expect in the hours and days after your first massage:
- Drink water: This is the most important thing you can do. Massage releases metabolic waste from your muscles, and water helps flush it out.
- Mild soreness: Especially after a deep tissue massage, you may feel slightly sore for a day or two — similar to post-workout soreness. This is normal and temporary.
- Relaxation: Many people feel deeply relaxed, even drowsy, after a massage. Avoid scheduling anything stressful immediately after if possible.
- Better sleep: You may sleep more deeply the night after your massage. Enjoy it.
Tips for First-Time Visitors
- Arrive a few minutes early so you do not feel rushed.
- Be honest about your needs — your attendant is there to help, not to judge.
- Communicate during the session — if the pressure is too much or too little, say so.
- Do not worry about "doing it right" — there is no wrong way to receive a massage.
- Breathe deeply — it helps your muscles relax and enhances the experience.
